Associated Builders and Contractors NorCal

Challenge/Goal
Build presence and raise awareness in Fresno to help battle the passing of a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) for the construction of a new high school.

Efforts
Developed a website (KnowPLAs.com) and social media campaign to create awareness in Fresno regarding the proposed Project Labor Agreement (PLA).

Outcome
Used our Instant Advocacy tools to allow the Fresno Community to reach Fresno Unified School District Board of Trustees through social media, email and text messaging to oppose the PLA.

LOBBYING

California Delivery Association (CDA)

Challenge/Goal
Develop relationships within the State Capitol and Capital Community and help to advance legislation or policy towards a modernized Motor Carrier Permit (MCP) to create greater flexibility for industry.

Efforts
Developed an aggressive campaign to build stronger relationships between CDA leadership and members both in the Capitol and at the local level. Efforts included: first-ever Lobby Day in Sacramento, comprehensive district office outreach effort, legislative committee testimony, and regular “walk the halls” efforts with CDA board members and activists. Also helped to coordinate meetings with Director of DMV and her team, CHP legislative advocates and senior members of Governor’s Office and State Transportation Agency. Worked over two-year cycle to initiate efforts for educating leaders and defining steps towards development of modernized MCP policy.

Outcome
Significantly greater presence within State Capitol, relationships built with officials and staff, more visibility in the media around key issues, and landmark efforts in 2017 and 2018 for legislation to modernize MCP.

LOBBYING

Leading Medical Provider Client

Challenge/Goal
Influence San Jose City Council to approve key medical delivery opportunities for client to residents and consumers within city.

Efforts
Recruited and engaged diverse coalition of community and city stakeholders to communicate with targeted members of the City Council about importance of allowing medical deliveries within the city. Efforts included: personal outreach and engagement of veterans, labor union leaders, ethnic leaders including leader of La Raza Roundtable and Chair of the NAACP chapter, various small business owners; meetings at City Hall; calls and emails from stakeholders to leaders; features in local media.

Outcome
Mayor Sam Liccardo and City Council voted to allow medical delivery for client purpose and service within community. Mayor Liccardo cited the significant public voices and communication as a major basis for their decision.

LOBBYING

Western States Petroleum Association (WPSA)

Challenge/Goal
Defeat or amend Senate Bill 350, legislation that, in part, would impose a 50% fuel reduction mandate on all California businesses and consumers.

Efforts
Recruited and mobilized upwards of 350 stakeholders – local elected officials, small business owners, agricultural leaders, working families, soccer parents, school and community organization officials – as “voices” to communicate opposition and first-hand concerns with such an onerous fuel reduction mandate and cost increase. Efforts included turnout of large groups for State Capitol hearings, a statewide media blitz in key markets with press conferences, legislative district office visits, letter/email/phone call outreach efforts, social media campaign.

Outcome
Governor, author of legislation, and legislators noted significant outcries from various communities, and thereby amended the bill to remove the fuel reduction mandate component.

LOBBYING

National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)

Challenge/Goal
Build stronger presence, membership and impact of NFIB as leading small business organization in California and pass more pro-small business legislation.

Efforts
Over course of eight years, developed an increased profile and positioning of NFIB and members – created new Day at the Capitol, more member engagement in Capitol and local level, association with more key business coalitions and Governor’s Office, increased media hits and opportunities, more member “touches” and engagement around key issues. Sponsored legislation to create more transparency with state regulations.

Outcome
Legislature passed, and Governor signed NFIB-sponsored legislation to streamline and create more transparency with regulations, increased visibility in Capitol and California community, increased membership and renewals in state (to date, largest number of renewal rate in nation).
