B. Wayne Hughes, Jr. Issues Response to Historic 2016 Election

B. Wayne Hughes, Jr., California philanthropist and businessman, issued the following statement in response to the results of the 2016 Presidential/General Election:

“Last night, the American people made it overwhelmingly clear they demand marked change – a new direction of hope, unity and opportunity for every family, child and small business in our great nation. This election was clearly a middle-class repudiation of Beltway establishment politics, Americans fed up with a dysfunctional government that has taken us down the same wrong road for too long. Both institutions have failed us, and Donald Trump has tapped into a discontentment and mood that I have long felt and expressed – it’s time for us to abandon the antiquated, precepts of the left and right.

“These past eight years have given U.S. voters good reason to feel grave uncertainty, apprehension and fear. A health care system that limits our choices but forces us to pay more. A decimated military and diplomacy strategy that have earned our country renown as weak and vulnerable instead of the pole position we once enjoyed as the world’s leading superpower. Government bureaucracies that overreach with massive costs and regulations that have turned our Main Streets into ghost towns.

“I congratulate Donald Trump and his campaign on their historic victory after months of hard work, perseverance and a commitment to restoring the greatness and leadership that indeed once made our blessed United States great. He is right to sound the clarion call for a united republic – Republicans, Democrats, all of us – working together for a better tomorrow.

“I wish President-elect Trump, the new “face” of our Congress and other newly-elected leaders many blessings and good fortune as they assume their new mantle of leadership in the months and years to come. Now more than ever, we must focus on joining together to build new bridges for success and prosperity that will benefit us now and for generations to come. This is also an opportunity to seek out and infuse new blood into our body politic – one that is not self-serving but functions for the people. Now it’s time to get to work.”
